Universal rhythms explored through music and movement – weaving together themes of transformation and the endless cycle of renewal. This powerful concert features Please let there be a paradise… by GRAMMY®-nominated composer Angel Lam. A hauntingly beautiful journey and reflection on love and loss, it sets the stage for the WORLD PREMIERE of Concerto for Jazz Trio by Dan Cavanagh, Director of the UW Mead Witter School of Music, that blends contemporary jazz with the spirit of reinvention. Concluding the concert, the orchestra brings to life Regeneration: A Pentalogy by local composer Michael Bell alongside the breathtaking WORLD PREMIERE of Renascence by Kanopy Dance, a deeply expressive journey through the ebb and flow of existence—birth, death, and the beauty that rises anew.
The WORLD PREMIERE of “Renascence”, a “Love Letter to Nature”, is a rhythmic dance journey that celebrates the harmony and regenerative power of connecting with our natural world. Inspired by and set to Michael Bell’s symphony, Regeneration: A Pentalogy, Cleary’s and Thurrell’s choreography evokes the Greek Goddess Gaia, the earth’s eternal guardian, who summons an ancient serpent and other elemental spirits - in the form of Kanopy’s Company of eight dancers - to awaken our consciousness and our transformative path to wisdom. Like floating sylphs, artfully draped in metallic pleated satins in reverence to the precious minerals in our earth, the dancers will glide through exquisitely crafted, ethereal dance moves - mirroring the melodic notes of the symphony in five captivating movements: Presence, Awakening, Effervescence, Chaos and Embrace.
Choreographed by Kanopy Dance Company Artistic Directors Robert E. Cleary and Lisa Thurrell
