The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra (WCO) has made the difficult decision to cancel this Wednesday's Concerts on the Square performance on July 29, 2026.
The decision comes as Madison continues to grieve following the fatal police shooting of Corey Durell Ruiz on July 22, 2026. In conversations with community stakeholders, it has become clear that this is a time for listening, reflection, and creating space for our community to process together.
“Our community is hurting,” says WCO CEO Joe Loehnis. “The Black community continues to grieve the loss of Corey Durell Ruiz, and we recognize the importance of honoring this moment with care and compassion. After listening to our community, we believe stepping back from this week’s performance is the right decision.”
“Concerts on the Square has always existed to bring people together,” says Music Director Andrew Sewell. “This week, we believe the most meaningful way we can serve our community is by making space for healing and for the important conversations that need to take place.”
As an arts organization, the WCO recognizes that its role is not to lead these conversations, but to support and amplify the work of trusted organizations that have long been serving Madison. The WCO encourages community members seeking opportunities for dialogue and support to connect with organizations including Freedom Inc., Urban Triage, The Center for Black Excellence and Culture, Nehemiah Center for Urban Development, the Urban League of Greater Madison, and the Black Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin. These organizations continue to provide leadership, resources, and spaces for meaningful community engagement.
“We know music has the power to unite people,” says Loehnis. “Sometimes, however, serving our community means recognizing that listening is what’s needed most. We remain committed to standing alongside Madison with humility, compassion, and hope for the future.”
