Ravel 's Tombeau de Couperin led the way to a revival of old dance forms and a movement towards neoclassicism when completed in 1917. We are excited to feature a commissioned work by New York composer Tom Cabaniss, for duo pianists and former Madisonian's, Jessica Chow and husband, Michael Shinn. They have amazing musical chemistry. We conclude the season in grand style with Schumann's Symphony No. 2, a stunning and virtuosic work that showcases all sections of the orchestra.

ABOUT MICHAEL SHINN
Pianist Michael Shinn's diverse career in music reflects his passion for both performance and education. He was recently named Director of Keyboard Curriculum at Juilliard, where he teaches private piano, chamber music, keyboard studies for both pianists and conductors, and courses in analysis for performers. Michael has designed innovative lectures and courses on a variety of subjects, focusing largely on his specialty, the music of Franz Liszt. In 2011, he was the Artistic Director of the Liszt Festival at Juilliard, a series of lecture-recitals celebrating the composer's bicentennial.
As a pianist, Michael is in demand as recitalist and chamber musician across the country and abroad. His recent and upcoming performances include concerts at Juilliard; Yamaha Artist Salon in New York City; the Centre for Performing Arts in Newnan, Georgia; Brock Hall in Birmingham, Alabama; and the vineyards of Sonoma and Napa Counties in California.
As part of the piano Sonoma Duo, Michael performs regularly with his wife, Jessica Chow Shinn, throughout the United States. He is co-founder and Artistic Director of the piano Sonoma Music Festival, a festival-workshop that brings together musicians from all walks of life to collaborate and perform in the vineyards of California. Passionate advocates of new music, the piano Sonoma Duo recently gave the world premieres of Sonata for Two Pianos by Michael White and Tiny Bits of Outrageous Love by Thomas Cabaniss.
Michael received his Bachelor and Master of Music from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Herbert Stessin and Jerome Lowenthal, and his Doctor of Musical Arts at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is also an Ironman triathlete and marathon runner.
ABOUT JESSICA CHOW SHINN
Pianist Jessica Chow Shinn, who recently joined the Juilliard faculty, has performed throughout the United States and Europe as a soloist and chamber musician. Recent engagements include recitals in Alice Tully Hall, the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, Trinity Church in Lower Manhattan, Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur in Montréal and Salle Cortot in Paris. In 2009, Jessica was a featured performer in the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's presentation of "Inside Chamber Music, Joy, and Despair: The Music of Schubert." Jessica's interest in the integration of theater and song has led to her appointment as Music Director in innovative New York University productions of works such as Schumann's Frauenliebe und Leben and Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch. She also recently produced, directed and performed in "Le Bestiaire: A Menagerie of Song," a series of staged performances of songs by Ravel, Poulenc, and André Caplet.

Jessica is dedicated to the musical education of both adult, college, and pre-college students. In addition to her teaching at Juilliard, she is a musicianship coach in the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artists Program, where she works individually with the rising singers of tomorrow. She is also a regular faculty member at the Samford University Piano Camp for intermediate and advanced high school students in Alabama.
Jessica received her Doctor of Musical Arts at The Juilliard School, where she studied with Margo Garrett, Jonathan Feldman, and Brian Zeger. She received her Master of Music from The New England Conservatory of Music and her Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College. She is also an award-winning chemistry presenter and a published author in such scientific journals as the Journal of Physical Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry.
