The sensational debut of Ilya Kaler at our 2016 opening concert drew immediate cries to re-engage him at the earliest possible time. Winner of three international violin competition gold medals, his Tchaikovsky performance was thrilling and unforgettable. He returns to perform Paganini’s signature violin concerto ‘La Campanella’, so named for the bell part in the final movement. Rossini wrote his six string sonatas in three days in 1804 when he was just 12 years old. They show an extraordinary precociousness and depth of emotion. The second sonata is an example of the influence of Mozart, and the slow movement particularly anticipating Rossini’s later operatic aspirations. Symphony No. 81 is vintage Haydn full of good humor, energy and lightheartedness.
