Bach ‘s Suite No. 4 provides the prelude to Edward MacDowell’s mighty Second Piano Concerto. An American original, the composer and piano virtuoso spent time in Paris and Frankfurt before returning to Boston in 1888. This seminal work has all the hallmarks of the late nineteenth century Romantic tradition and anticipates Rachmaninov. It will be performed by Brazilian pianist, Alexandre Dossin, First Prize winner at the 2003 Martha Argerich International Piano Competition. The Symphony No.3 “Rhenish” by Robert Schumann is a work of great beauty and power, written during a time of great joy in the composer’s life.
