Irish composer John Field, was born in Dublin in 1782, and spent much of his adult life abroad. A gifted pianist, he became Clementi’s protégé, eventually settling in St. Petersburg. Highly regarded by his contemporaries, his playing and compositions influenced Chopin, Brahms, Schumann and Liszt, and he was best known for inventing the nocturne, a form perfected later by Chopin. His Piano Concerto No. 4 in E-flat will be performed by UW Professor and Madison-based concert pianist, Christopher Taylor.
In celebration of the Irish, we will also share the music of Granville Bantock, his Celtic Symphony, a work for string orchestra and six harps, and Mendelssohn’s famous Hebrides Overture. Everything comes back full circle as we conclude with Mozart’s exhilarating Symphony No. 35, the ‘Haffner,’ composed in the same year as John Field’s birth.
