Hyunsil Roh

Violinist HyunsiHyunsil Rohl Roh joined the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra at the beginning of the 2010-2011 season.  Prior to joining WCO, Ms. Roh was a student of David Perry, first violinist of the Pro Arte Quartet, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  A native of Korea, Ms. Roh began studying the piano at the age of 6, but gravitated towards the violin at the age of 9.  Soon after she was accepted to the Sun-Hwa Arts School, she was performing numerous recitals in Seoul, Korea.

Ms. Roh enjoys a multi-faceted career as a recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral player throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.  Since 2007, she has been a member of the first violin section with the Madison Symphony Orchestra.  Her most recent orchestral engagements have been with the Milwaukee Symphony, Elgin Symphony, and Madison Bach Musicians.  Dedicated to community outreach, she has represented the Madison Symphony Orchestra and University of Wisconsin-Madison through live performances and education in elementary schools throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.   Ms. Roh’s passion for teaching can be seen through her chamber and orchestra sectional coachings at the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra and UW-Madison.  She also teaches at Music Makers, a non-profit organization in Madison, Wisconsin that offers violin lessons to children from underrepresented backgrounds.

Ms. Roh holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Violin Performance with distinction from the Eastman School of Music, a Master of Music degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Throughout her studies in music, she has participated in and received full scholarships for many national and international music festivals such as THY Masterclass in Denmark, The Music Academy of the West in California, National Institute Orchestra in Maryland, the Garth Newel in Virginia, and Chautauqua Institution in New York.  Her principal teachers include David Perry, Felicia Moye, Kathleen Winkler, Oleh Krysa, and Alyce Cognetta Bertz.
